Why Wanaka
Gateway to the outdoors
Often referred to as the sleepy alpine village, Wanaka is the perfect place to unwind. It can be a laid back or as exhilarating as you’d like it, there’s something here for everyone. From watching the sun set across the tranquil lake Mt Roy, to venturing far into the wild Mt Aspiring National Park, there’s no shortage of places to see and experiences to have.
In winter, Wanaka boasts three world-class ski fields; Cardrona, Treble Cone and Snow Farm, all within 35 minutes drive to the summit carpark, perfect for an afternoon outing without needing to pack the car for a weekend away — you’re already most of the way there.
In Summer, the evenings are long and warm and the lake is constantly calling. With boating and sailing facilities placed around the lakeside, the places you can explore are endless.
There’s also a huge range of bike trails, ranging from flowing cruises along the banks for the Clutha River, to a range of adrenaline pumping purpose built tracks at the bike parks at Glendhu Bay and Cardrona. Put simply, you’ll be doing well to tick off every activity Wanaka has to offer.
Hiking
Wanaka offers a huge range walking trails. From the mellow grades of Millennium or Outlet track close to town, to full day hikes into the wilderness of Mt Aspiring National Park and up to the West Coast, there’s a walk available for everyone.
Cycling
Possibly one of the most active bike communities in the country, cycling is a way of life here in Wanaka. Simply just as a commute across town or as a way of exploring the endless landscape, you’ll be sure to find your favourite track in no time.
Golf
Wanaka’s Golf Club is only two minutes drive away (or 400m along pathways). Meaning you can get there by golf cart and be on the fairway pulling out the driver to tee off with no effort at all. Did we mention you’ll also enjoy uninterrupted views right across the lake along the way?
Boating
Lake Wanaka has a large range of boating and sailing facilities as well as support shops in town. Boat ramps dot the lake’s edge and in Summer there’s often a good amount of activity out on the water. Another perfect way to explore the area.
Skiing
With Cardrona, Treble Cone and Snow Farm all only 35 minutes drive from your doorstep, there’s little to stop you from being on top of the world putting in some powder turns. And if that’s not enough, Remarkables and Coronet Peak are only an hour away in Queenstown.
Fishing
Regarded as one of New Zealand’s top freshwater fishing regions, the Upper Clutha provides a large range of fishing opportunities, often with salmon, rainbow trout and brown trout. Find hidden gems from the alps to Otago’s rolling hills and out to the coast.
Wine and dine
Being located in the Central Otago region, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there’s an incredible array of vineyards and wineries nearby. Local tasting rooms will enliven your palette along with world-class chefs providing a dining experience you won’t forget.
Fly in and out
Queenstown is just over the (big) hill and it’s International Airport provides an easy solution for all coming and goings. Easy for you, easy for friends and family. Queenstown also offers an amplified number of options for fun, with indoor and outdoor. Alternatively, fly with Sounds Air directly into Wanaka airport and soak in the 360 degree mountainous landscape.
